Choosing glass vs wooden spindles comes down to the look you want, how you use your hallway and the budget for the work. Changing a balustrade can make a big difference without replacing the whole staircase.
At L&R Joinery, we fit both across Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. This guide compares the options using our own Nottingham wooden spindle replacement and Leicester oak-and-glass installation. Explore our staircases and balustrades service for more about the work we offer.
Glass vs wooden spindles: the main differences
Glass gives a clearer view through the stairwell, while wooden spindles create a more defined pattern. Both can suit an existing staircase, depending on its construction and condition. Think about the handrail, newel posts, flooring and internal doors together rather than choosing each component separately.
Turned timber spindles have a traditional appearance. Square profiles give a simpler finish. Clear glass paired with oak keeps the natural warmth of timber while opening up the view across a landing.
Wooden spindle replacement in Nottingham: before and after
This Nottingham staircase had solid panels along the stair flight and landing. The panels gave it an enclosed appearance, particularly when looking across the landing. The following photographs show the balustrade before replacement.
Before: the solid panel along the stair flight.
Before: the enclosed landing balustrade.
We replaced the solid infill with wooden spindles and fitted new timber rails. These photographs show the joinery after installation, with the new timber still awaiting its decorative finish.
After: wooden spindles open up the view through the stairwell.
After: the staircase and landing from the second angle.
The green feature wall is visible through the new balustrade. It is a useful example of how timber can make a previously enclosed staircase feel more open while keeping a traditional style.
Photography note: the landscape images include digitally extended surrounding areas.
When are wooden stair spindles a good choice?
Choose wooden spindles if you like some detail in the staircase or want a painted finish. Painted spindles with a natural timber handrail are another option. A simple square profile can work in a modern hallway, so timber does not have to mean an ornate design.
Timber also gives you scope to change the finish later. Painted spindles can be repainted when your colour scheme changes, although preparing each face takes longer than painting a flat panel. Decoration and the finish to any retained posts should be agreed as part of the quotation.
Oak and glass balustrade installation in Leicester
Our Leicester project takes a different approach: oak posts and rails with clear glass panels on the landing. The timber frames the stair opening, while the glass keeps the view through the space.

If you like the warmth of oak but want fewer visual interruptions across the landing, this combination is worth considering. It can sit alongside existing features, including the exposed stone visible in this property.
Does a glass balustrade make a hallway feel bigger?
It can make the space feel more open because you can see through it. Glass does not change the width of the stairs. The effect depends on the position of windows, the landing layout and what sits behind the balustrade.
On some staircases, open wooden spindles already give the hallway the lift it needs. On others, clear glass makes the most of a view across the landing. Looking at both options against photographs of your own staircase is a sensible starting point.
Which is easier to keep clean?
Glass needs regular wiping if you want it to stay clear, especially where fingerprints catch the light. Timber spindles need dusting around their edges and, with turned profiles, their curves. Neither option is completely maintenance-free.
Oak handrails need suitable care whichever infill you choose. Use cleaning products appropriate for the finish applied to the timber and follow the glass supplier's advice for panels and fittings.
How much does replacing a banister and spindles cost?
Our wooden spindle options start from roughly £1,400. This is a starting guide, not the price of the Nottingham project shown. The length of the stair and landing balustrade, timber choice, newel-post work and decoration required will affect the quotation.
Oak and glass work is priced to suit the installation. A long landing, several changes of direction or alterations to existing posts can make a substantial difference. There is no single price that covers every staircase.
When comparing quotes, check whether they include materials, fitting, removal of the old balustrade, disposal and decoration. Our written quotation will set out the agreed scope. Read our staircase renovation costs guide for broader budgeting advice.
Can you change the balustrade without replacing the stairs?
Often, yes. Where the existing staircase is suitable, the work can focus on the visible rails, infill and posts. An inspection is needed to establish which parts can stay and how new components will be secured.
Loose posts or movement in the existing structure need attention before the new balustrade is fitted. Timber and glass systems both need an appropriate specification and secure installation. Appearance alone does not establish whether a design is suitable.
