At L&R Joinery, wooden spindle balustrade renovations start from around £1,400. The right option depends on the staircase you have, the look you want and how much of the landing needs updating.

Before and after: a £2,000 staircase renovation in Long Eaton
We completed this project in Long Eaton in October 2026. The staircase previously had white horizontal rails along the flight and around the landing. The homeowner’s existing stairs stayed in place while we updated the balustrade.
The new timber handrails and upright wooden spindles change the appearance of both the staircase and the landing, complemented by white newel posts. The completed job cost £2,000.
These photographs show the change from both angles: looking up the flight and looking down from the landing. It is a useful example of what a balustrade renovation can achieve without replacing the staircase itself.
Can you keep your existing stairs and newel posts?
Often, yes. A dated balustrade does not automatically mean the stairs need replacing. We look at the condition of the existing staircase, the fixings and the proposed design before recommending what can stay.
Suitable newel posts may be retained and incorporated into the new design. If a post needs replacing or adapting, we include that in the quotation. The aim is to agree a practical scope for your particular staircase.
Wooden spindles or oak and glass?
Wooden spindles work well if you want a familiar style with a fresh appearance. The Long Eaton project combines natural timber with white posts, and shows how that combination looks across a flight and landing. Oak and glass gives a different finish, with clearer views through the balustrade. It generally sits at a higher price point. We can discuss both options and quote for the specification you prefer.
What affects staircase renovation costs?
The length of the stair flight, the amount of landing balustrade, the material choices and the work needed to the posts all affect the cost. Painting, staining and other finishing requirements should also be agreed as part of the scope.
A photograph is a useful starting point, but we confirm measurements and the existing condition before giving a firm price.
How long does the work take?
The programme depends on the size of the staircase and what is being changed. We confirm the expected installation time with your quotation, including any separate finishing work, so you know what to expect before work begins.
